A few years ago when I saw the robed and hooded Arab man on the news last week, I knew I was out-dated. “Oh, my Lord,” I said to my husband, “look at his face!”
“What about it?’ he asked nonchalantly.
“He’s got on those popular rimless glasses. Now I know I’ll have to get that style!” Honestly, every time I’m out in public I think my mind is playing tricks on me. I see so many faces with the same kind of glasses…the lenses with no frame, only a piece of metal across the nose and ear pieces on each side. Now the phenomenon has struck across all nationalities
I find it hard to believe that I have worn glasses for half a century so they are now as part of me as the nose on my face. Every two years when I get my eye exam, I treat myself to the new trend in frames, even if my prescription hasn’t changed. So… next time I got my exam at Costco, I went over to the optical department to try on frames.
“Nice,” I said to the lady behind the counter as I modeled the latest in popular eyewear.
“I really don’t care for ‘em,” she responded.“People that have those frames keep coming back in to have them adjusted because they get out of whack so easily.”
“Oh,” I responded. I felt cheated. This was the right time, the right place, and even for frugal me… the right price. I turned to put the frames back.
“You don’t want the same kind of frames everyone else has do you?” She quizzed.
Oh, yes, I do want what everyone else has, I thought, and then said out loud, “You have a point there.”
I stood a while deep in thught. What was I going to do? I didn’t want to look as though I had no idea what a fashion statement was nor did I relish the thought of constantly driving over to get them adjusted. I pulled off a few different frames from the rack and tried them on. I liked them… but they just weren’t the popular ones. I wanted to cry. I wanted to run out of there. I didn’t want to make a decision.
“You know,” the lady began again. “We have a 30 day warranty so you can change the frames anytime before that if you aren’t satisfied.”
I could actually pick out the frame, wear them for a while and just bring them back for a switch if I didn’t like them? Was it is that easy? I decided then to get the regular, not so trendy frames after all. Yeah, why not express my individuality? Anyway, I did have the option to change my mind if I decided I REALLY just had to have the others. How long do frames stay in style anyway? Round, square, big and small... I’ve had them all.
Sporting my newly bought frames, my daughter and I went to the Titanic exhibit at a museum to see the artifacts brought up from the ocean floor. When we stopped to look at the items on a table behind the ropes, I couldn’t believe my eyes. “Look at that,” I laughed as I pointed to the rimless eye glasses neatly laid out on a white cloth in a display case.
I never took advantage of the 30 day warranty to switch frames. I’d rather be in style.
