Top 10 Reasons to Spend Less

By: Stephanie Faulkner

I don’t spend money for expensive restaurant meals, frivolous items to set around the house, expensive hair cuts, big expensive cars, brand spanking new cars or tons of outdoor stuff for working in a yard that I just as soon leave in its natural state. Spending big bucks on gobs of clothes might be fun for some but I’d rather put what money I have someplace else. Besides, I couldn’t cram a bunch of clothes in my itty-bitty bedroom closet.

To open the door and look inside of my closet, one would be totally flabbergasted. If I were a single man with little financial means, then there would be no opened mouth looks. But for a middle income senior woman, it is indeed surprising to see such few women’s clothing hanging there. I’ve purged my small wardrobe for the season and lay in wait for great sales or markdowns (maybe including coupons and senior discounts).

I love getting a great bargain and have been known to go out of my way to do so. I believe in the old saying....a penny saved is a penny earned and when you find one pick up it up. The Dollar store and Wal-Mart are good friends but I’ll hit the malls when the markdowns flourish. Not only do I work on getting a bargain but I also do all kinds of things (all legal) to make extra money to supplement my regular working life.

My sister Cheryl asks why I hang on to every cent. We are not a well-to-do family by a long shot but I could let up some. A lot of women love to spend the money they have at their disposal. My husband says I shouldn’t want people to think I can’t afford much. That, he thinks, makes him look as though he doesn’t have much of a job and can’t do better for his wife. Really? So why does getting a real bargain make me giddy? Well, here are my “top” ten reasons and if I ever win the lottery…. Some of the money will go towards these. Believe it or not, I’ll even spend some of it on myself!

“My top10 reasons to spend less (or be cheap)”

  1. More money to help my daughters when/if needed
  2.  More money to give to charity if I feel so moved
  3.  If I can’t take it with me, I’d rather leave it to my daughters
  4.  My husband and I may be able to retire earlier
  5.  Can’t see the reason to spend big money on what I can get cheaper
  6.  Security in knowing if I need it… I’ll have it
  7.  Love it when I get a compliment on something I got cheap!
  8.  I feel more in tune with the world when I see the underprivileged
  9.  To have more money to spend on that which I know will enrich my life
  10.  Because Clark Howard does it!

While shopping the other day I ran into a friend as I stood by a display of sale shirts trying to decide between two that I liked. Only needing one, I asked her which did she think I should get and she gave me the answer, “Life’s short, get both.” She was right, life’s short… so I put one back. See my top 10.
